Skylights Options for Flat Roofs

Skylights Options for Flat Roofs

Skylights are an excellent option for your home as they provide brilliant light to the exterior. You can add life to your home and make your living space feel very roomy. Compared to a window on your wall, skylights on your roof would be able to give your home more lighting as they would illuminate your house.

Opting for skylights is a wise move, but one needs to make sure the choice of the skylights is the right one. Skylights for flat roofs are made differently compared to those made for sloped roofs, and installing the wrong skylight in your home can cause serious damage. When your home has this fixture, you will certainly be the cause of envy among your family and friends.

Generally, installing skylights in your home, especially one with a flat roof, would be able to cause drainage problems; however, there are specific choices of skylights for your home, such as curb mount dome skylight, curb flat mount skylight with venting, architectural pyramid skylight, round dome skylight, and tinted skylight.

Before purchasing, do make sure that the manufacturer sells you the appropriate skylights, which are specifically used for flat roofs. Skylights used for flat roofs should have a minimum pitch as a flat roof has a low pitch, and fixing a skylight intended for a sloped roof would cause a significant amount of trouble. You may not feel any problem at the beginning, but with time, the drainage mechanism in the skylight design for high-pitch roofs would fail, and as a result, your roof would leak.

Domed skylights are the general choices for a flat roof as they promote drainage on your roof. Usually, when flat skylights are installed on flat roofs, they can cause water pooling which will lead to leakage. When you select a dome skylight, it would help the water flow on your roof and also give a wider spectrum of lighting to your home. Think creatively and install a dome-shaped skylight, and you may add character to your home’s exterior design.

Architectural pyramid skylights are the current favorites because they add more dimension to the lighting of your home. Imagine walking into a room in bright daylight to find it as brightly lit as the outdoors. This kind of skylight is best suited for a kitchen or a library, or a reading area. However, you must realize that they are trickier to install because of their many frames.

Tinted skylights for your home are also an excellent choice as they would offer your home an amazing appearance of a classic setting. If you have a flat roof, it would be easier to install colored glass as the pitch is very low, and the design of the glass would not be disfigured by the slanting roof. Choosing a tinted skylight for your dining area or bedrooms are an excellent choice.

To be worry-free, you should talk to a professional about installing skylights in your home. This would save you time and trouble in purchasing the wrong type of skylight. You may also want to scout for the different types or the many designs of skylights through a reputed dealer before deciding.
